Pilotage is compulsory for all foreign flagships navigating inland waterways and channels south of Puerto Montt and in the Strait of Magellan. Ordering of pilotage must be made through a ship agency. There are two main pilotage options:

a)   Ocean to Ocean option is only available to ships not calling at Chilean ports other than those situated in the Strait of Magellan. A local pilot from Punta Arenas boards at Possession Bay for westbound voyages and disembarks at Punta Arenas, or vice-versa for eastbound ships. Ships with LOA over 200m must embark two strait pilots.

As an additional option (non compulsory) and for those who required it, the pilotage service is available through the route Punta Arena - Faro Felix and vice versa.

b)   Full pilotage is compulsory for all ships calling at any Chilean port or wishing to navigate interior waterways of the Patagonian Channels. Two pilots must embark at Possession Bay and disembark at Corona Lighthouse or at Laitec pilot station.
